According to the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) on September 17, 22 educational institutes across Pakistan have been closed again.

The NCOC released a statement saying,

During last 48 hours, 22 educational institutions across Pakistan have been closed due to non compliance of health SOPs/protocols and disease prevalence

As per the statement, 16 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 1 in Islamabad, and 5 educational institutes in Azad Jammu and Kashmir have been shut down. Reportedly, these schools failed to follow the mandatory SOPs. Hence, this led to a resurgence in COVID-19 cases.

After 16 students reportedly tested positive post reopening, the administration shut down a medical college in Islamabad. Moreover, the respective authorities further closed down the hostels as well.

The Islamabad District Health Office (DHO) said,

Numerous cases of Covid-19 have been reported from Riphah Medical College, Islamabad, since September 9. Till date more than 16 cases have been reported. This trend is very alarming as this institute is becoming a super spreader and a hotspot for Covid-19.

The NCOC statement read,

A major educational institution sealed in Islamabad.

They further announced that contact tracing to ‘ensure containment’ will be carried out.

Furthermore, the Head of Marketing and Communications Haris Tohid clarified the misinformation while speaking with Dawn News,

Campuses have not been shut down, only academic activity has been suspended. Right now, we only suspect a certain number of cases. Giving any type of number at this point would be irresponsible. If the actual number is higher than the number we give, we will be misleading the public. But if the actual number is lower, then we will be creating panic.

Educational Institutes Conduct the COVID-19 Test

Moreover, certain educational institutes have resorted to conducting COVID-19 tests before reopening. The students awaiting test results are staying at home whilst academic activity resumed from September 15.

Furthermore, the students who test positive for COVID-19 will be in self-isolation for a distinct amount of period. Additionally, students who test negative for COVID-19 will consequently be allowed to rejoin classes once they are in the clear.
