On August 5, former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, former petroleum secretary Arshad Mirza along with two other people were arraigned for the illegal appointment in PSO.

Allegedly, he was responsible for designating Sheikh Imran-ul-Haq -the managing director of finance- and Yaqoob Sattar -the deputy managing director of finance- their respective positions at the PSO by abusing his power.

However, in court, all four of them pleaded not guilty.

To further investigate this accusation, the Supreme Court ordered NAB to prepare the inquiry report. It was submitted in July 2018 and it declared the appointment of Mr. Haq illegal.

Moreover, there is evidence against Mr. Haq and his conflicts of interest regarding his previous employment at Engro Corporation.

Additionally, NAB found out that Mr. Haq appointed Yaqoob Sattar as the deputy managing director one month after he joined PSO.

An infuriated Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi called for the disestablishment of NAB, who he claims is,

“being used politically for harassing the people.”

Although when questioned about the unorthodox appointment of Yaqoob Sattar and Sheikh Imran-ul-Haq, he said,

“If as a petroleum minister I cannot appoint one or two persons to run the state oil company, then what is my authority?”

Did SKA admit to abusing his power and then tried to justify it?

But What About All the Monetary Losses, Mr. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi?

The promotion of Mr. Sattar as DMD resulted in a massive loss of Rs138.96 million under his supervision.

Mr. Khawaja Naveed, the counsel person of Mr. Abbasi and former petroleum secretary appealed for the adjournment of the trial till August 27. The Court has ordered submission of the testimonies of all the witnesses till then.
