A test indicates that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned; the doctors in Berlin Hospital are currently treating him.

The Charite hospital in Berlin issued a statement saying,

Clinical evidence suggests an intoxication through a substance belonging to the group of cholinesterase inhibitors.

However, the Russian doctors rejected the claim of the German doctors, saying no poisonous substance was found in Navalny’s body.

Anti-corruption Russain campaigner Alexei Navalny was on the flight to Moscow from the Siberian city of Tomsk last week when he collapsed. The plane made an emergency landing in the Siberian city of Omsk where he was shifted to hospital for treatment.

Afterward, he fled to Germany for further medical treatment.

However, Navalny’s spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said that last week he fell sick from suspected poisoning in a cup of tea which he took during the flight.

Alexei Navalny, Diseased or Poisoned?

The doctors at the Charite hospital in Berlin said that Kremlin critic, suffering from intoxication from a group of cholinesterase inhibitors. Currently, he is an artificial coma in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

His state of health is serious, but there is currently no acute danger to his life.

About the exact substance that used to poison, the doctors said,

The exact substance is not yet known

However, the medical team warns of possible side effects on Navalny’s nervous system. The doctors are treating Mr. Nalvany with antidote atropine.

Earlier this week the same Siberian doctors -who rejected the claim of Germans doctor and first treated Navalny- suggest that a metabolic disorder triggered by low blood sugar caused the illness.

People Call for an Investigation

Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, called for an investigation in a statement published on Monday evening,

The European Union strongly condemns what seems to be an attempt on Mr Navalny’s life. It is imperative that the Russian authorities initiate an independent and transparent investigation on the poisoning of Mr Navalny without delay

it continued in a statement by the bloc’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs,
The Russian people, as well as the international community, are demanding the facts behind Mr Navalny’s poisoning. Those responsible must be held to account
In a joint statement with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel said,
In view of Mr Navalny’s prominent role in the political opposition in Russia, the authorities there are now urgently called upon to investigate this act thoroughly, and to do so with full transparency.
We hope that Mr. Navalny can recover fully. Our good wishes also extend to his family, which is undergoing a severe test.
Earlier on Monday, the German government said it was “fairly likely” that Navalny was poisoned and would, therefore, need special protection.

Alexei Navalny has been the most prominent face of Russian opposition to President Vladimir Putin. In the 2018 presidential election of Russia, Navalny barred to run against Vladimir Putin and put into jail over his conviction by a Russian court of embezzlement.

This is the second time Alexei Navalny has been exposed to toxic agents. Last year while he was in jail, over corruption charges, he was diagnosed with Contact Dermatitis i.e. an itchy rash caused by an allergen. The doctors at that time raised the same question of possible poisoning.
